Our programme affords the artist the opportunity, time, and freedom to work in dynamic and creative spaces, founded on the basis of learning by exchange; artists teach, encourage and influence each other, ultimately enhancing their artistic practice. Our residency sponsored artists enjoy continual support and exposure of their work through our sponsored booths at major local and international Art Fairs and other exchange projects for up to 2 years.


The artists residency programme is subdivided into 4 categories;


  • The Young Female Artist Residency Award - South African call - 9 to 12 Months

  • Women in Africa call - 5 months

  • The Cultural Exchange Programme - Partnership-based cultural projects 1- 4 Months

  • Self funded residencies - Open call 1 - 4 Months.

- The Young Female Artist Residency Award

The call targets young South African female visual artists preferably under the age of 32, with at least a full year’s working experience as artists. This is a merit-based opportunity awarded on the basis of artistic excellence and the promise of future potential.


The project supports the top 2 - 4 artists from this call in form of a residency fellowship. The artists are awarded with;


  • Free Studio Space

  • Free accommodation based on need

  • Materials budget,

  • Basic living stipend contribution

  • Participation at all major local Art Fairs and at least one major International Art Fair.

  • Group and or Solo exhibition with some of our partner commercial galleries

  • Periodic critique sessions, and professional practice mentorship

  • R45,000.00 stipend on travel to international residency

  • A return flight ticket and Visas

  • Solo or group show on completion of the entire residency program

  • Continual support and exposure of the artists work through The Project Space sponsored booth at major local and international Art Fairs and other exchange projects for up to 2 years.

- Women in Africa Call residency

This call targets women in visual artists on the African continent preferably not older than 40 years, excluding South Africa. The selected artist is awarded with a 4 -5 months residency at The Project Space studios in Johannesburg.

  • Free accommodation

  • Free studio space

  • A return ticket to and from Johannesburg

  • Materials support

  • Basic living stipend contribution

  • Solo or group exhibition at the end of the residency

  • Opportunity to have their work exhibited at major local and international art fairs.

- The Cultural Exchange Programme - Partnership-based cultural projects 

This is an artist exchange programme with some of our cultural partners both local and international. At the moment they include; Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art in France, The Swiss Arts Council, and The Uganda Arts Trust.

- Self funded residencies - Open call

This residency programme allows artists, local or international at any levels in their career to apply for residencies of 1 - 4 months. Artists source their own sponsorship or funding for the residency. Applications are accepted all throughout the year, but residencies are awarded as space permits, given the applicant’s preferred schedule.
